49ers quarterback Brock Purdy is playing himself into the NFL MVP conversation.
After a nearly flawless start to the season, the second-year quarterback is in the inner-circle of MVP candidates at FanDuel Sportsbook.
Purdy is tied with Josh Allen at +700 on FanDuel’s odds board, the fourth-best odds to win the award behind Patrick Mahomes (+350), Tua Tagovailoa (+500) and Jalen Hurts (+600).
It’s been an unbelievable start to the season for the 49ers and Purdy, who came into the year at +5000 — far from contender status — to win the MVP.
San Francisco is a perfect 5-0 through the first five weeks of the season while outscoring its opponents by a league-best 99 points.
Purdy has thrown for 1,271 yards (eighth-most in the NFL) and nine touchdown passes. His 9.3 yards per pass attempt and 72.1 completion percentage are both second-best in the league. Purdy is still yet to throw an interception as well.
The 2022 NFL Draft’s Mr. Irrelevant carved up the Dallas Cowboys on “Sunday Night Football” this week in what was his most impressive game so far this season.
Purdy threw for four touchdowns and 252 yards during the 42-10 drubbing of what was the No. 1 defense in the NFL coming into Week 5.
Betting on the NFL?
That strong performance came just a week after Purdy broke the 49ers’ single-game completion percentage record against the Cardinals when he completed 20 of 21 passes.
San Francisco’s dominant start has not just one, but two players in the MVP conversation.
Though the NFL MVP is usually a quarterback’s award, running back Christian McCaffrey is tied with Lamar Jackson and Trevor Lawrence at +2000, the eighth-best odds to take home the hardware.
