If it wasn’t against NFL rules, the Jets might have held tryouts for a center during halftime.
Fourth-stringer Xavier Newman, a guard called up from the practice squad for Sunday’s game against the Giants, took over midway through the second quarter as injuries shredded the depth chart.
Predictably, the first exchange between Newman and quarterback Zach Wilson resulted in a fumble recovered by the Giants, who couldn’t turn the takeaway into points because their offense is in its own debilitating spot with third-string rookie quarterback Tommy DeVito making his NFL debut.
After starting center Connor McGovern left the game with a knee injury, Wes Schweitzer slid over from left guard to snap the ball.
But Schweitzer didn’t last long before suffering a calf injury.
The Jets started the game without Joe Tippman, who is the left guard and backup center.
Newman entered the game with 16 career offensive snaps played over last season and earlier this season for the Titans.
