An insane comeback rewarded fortuitous sports bettors in Phoenix thanks to the young Spurs.
Entering Tuesday’s game against the Suns as +375 underdogs at FanDuel Sportsbook, San Antonio rallied for a ridiculous comeback victory despite being down 20 points.
The Spurs’ odds were as high as 60/1 to win the game when they were trailing, 95-79, with 35 seconds left in the third quarter.
The Suns led 114-111 with 14 seconds left before a crazy sequence following a wild missed 3-pointer by Devin Vassell led to an improbable Spurs win.
Rookie Victor Wembanyama delivered a put-back dunk to pull the Spurs within one point.
Kevin Durant then turned the ball overl after the in-bounds play, with the ball snatched from his hands.
The future Hall of Famer was begging for a foul call that never came, and Keldon Johnson won it for the Spurs with a dunk as time expired.
Wembanyama mostly led the way for San Antonio, scoring 10 of his 18 points in the fourth quarter to go along with two of his four blocks.
This is one of the most unlikely wins of the young NBA season, although upsets have only become more regular as the NBA’s 3-point shot-making variance takes a stranglehold on the league.
Teams are constantly trying their luck with volumes of 3-point shot attempts, and stars are still missing games with load management.
Spreads can still be massive, especially as the season progresses and franchises look to tank for draft picks.
The Trail Blazers sat most of their starting roster at the end of last season to tank for a better draft pick, a successful endeavor that landed them guard Scoot Henderson at No. 3 overall.
They did, though, beat the Minnesota Timberwolves as 19.5-point underdogs on April 2, 2023. The Trail Blazers had +1200 odds to win straight-up, according to the Action Network.
Betting on the NBA?
ESPN reported the Blazers were the biggest underdog to win in at least 30 years since the Orlando Magic beat the Michael Jordan-led Chicago Bulls as 21-point underdogs in the 1991-92 season.
Still, coming back from a 20-point deficitand as 60/1 live moneyline underdogs is undoubtedly one of the biggest betting comebacks in NBA history.
The largest comeback in NBA history happened in 1996 when the Utah Jazz overcame a 36-point deficit against the Denver Nuggets.
