Dak Prescott showed some solidarity with his embattled head coach on Sunday night after the Cowboys fell well short of their goals in a loss to the Packers 48-32 in the Wild Card round of the playoffs.
Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy is facing plenty of questions about his job security after Dallas was bounced from the playoffs early despite a 12-5 season.
But Prescott stepped in afterward and told reporters that if McCarthy was on the hot seat, he should be too.
“He’s been amazing,” Prescott said. “I don’t know how there can be [questions about his job], but I understand the business. In that case, it should be about me as well, honestly. That guy, I’ve had the season I’ve had because of him. This team has had the success they’ve had because of him. I understand it’s about winning the Super Bowl, and that’s the standard of the league and damn sure should be the standard of this place. I get it, but add me to the list in that case.”
Prescott threw for 403 yards on 41 completions and three touchdowns, but he also threw two interceptions in the loss.
The Cowboys have failed to make it further than the divisional round in three consecutive seasons despite recording 12 wins in each campaign.
The Cowboys QB had an MVP-caliber 2023, throwing a league-leading 36 touchdowns, which led to reports that Prescott and the team would engage in contract extension talks that could make him the highest-paid quarterback in the NFL.
But the lack of postseason success raises the question of whether team owner Jerry Jones will want to commit that type of money to Prescott after 2024.
“I really haven’t thought about this at all. So, I won’t comment on it since I haven’t thought about it,” Jones told reporters, according to Pro Football Talk. “My complete thought for the last several weeks have totally been around anticipating and planning on advancing from this game to another game here at the stadium since we found out we were going to have this home field. So I’m going to back to the complete bottom of my thought process to think about anything other than next week’s game here.”
Jones will have plenty of time to figure out his organization’s next steps after the loss on Sunday.
