Former Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman wouldn’t change a thing about his former head coach, Bill Belichick, even if he’s “socially awkward.”
In the latest installment of his “Games with Names” podcast, Edelman — who won three Super Bowls with Belichick in his 12-year NFL career — recalled taking a private jet with Belichick to New York for a joint appearance on “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon” after the Patriots’ historic overtime 34-28 win against the Atlanta Falcons in Super Bowl LI in February 2017.
“He was fun,” Edelman said. “I mean you know Bill, that’s the only time you can bank on that Bill is smiling and having a good time. I’m sure like five days later, he’s onto the [NFL] draft.
“He’s a fun guy. We had some awesome conversations. We took a jet together to New York right after the Super Bowl.”
Fox Sports host Charissa Thompson, who was a guest on Edelman’s podcast, asked if there was any “weird awkwardness in conversations” with Belichick throughout the trip.
“Definitely, there is always awkwardness with Bill,” Edelman said. “He’s socially awkward, but in a cool — like ‘Ahh, that’s my socially awkward friend.’
“I probably could say that now… I need to get Bill on this God dang couch [as a guest on his podcast].”
Edelman went on to explain that he’d be upset if Belichick did one specific show before his.
“I swear if he does [‘The Pat] McAfee [Show’] before he does my show, that would hurt me,” he said, before joking: “I didn’t take all those team-friendly deals for just nothing.”
Belichick is known for his stern demeanor and solid poker face.
At one point during their “The Tonight Show” appearance, Belichick held hands with Edelman after the wideout joked that the coach is “a big meditator.”
Edelman quipped, “That’s the first time he’s ever touched me by the way.”
The Patriots’ win over the Falcons in Super Bowl LI was the largest comeback in Super Bowl history.
New England trailed by 25 points in the third quarter and it seemed as though all hope was lost — but now-retired quarterback Tom Brady played lights out.
A magnificent catch by Edelman set up New England’s 91-yard, game-tying drive with two minutes left in the fourth quarter — and they sealed the win in extra minutes.
Belichick and the Patriots mutually parted ways four days after New England’s Week 18 loss to the Jets on Jan. 7 — ending a historic 24-year run.
The Patriots finished this season at the bottom of the AFC East with a 4-13 record, the franchise’s worst since 1992.
Belichick’s services are available following two rounds of interviews with the Falcons, who announced Raheem Morris as their head coach last Thursday.
