Justin Fields whispers begin after Steelers cut Mitch Trubisky

Mitch Trubisky won’t be providing the competition for quarterback Kenny Pickett the Steelers are seeking next training camp, but some intriguing names are emerging about whom Pittsburgh may try to add, Justin Fields chief among them.

The Steelers cut Trubisky on Monday, the same day ESPN’s Adam Schefter said on “The Pat McAfee Show” that head coach Mike Tomlin is a “big fan” of Fields, whom the Bears might trade as they hold the No. 1 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft and could take a quarterback.

That revelation comes on the heels of Schefter’s Super Bowl Sunday report that the Bears have discussed the possibility of keeping Fields while still drafting a QB at No. 1, likely USC’s Caleb Williams.

The Bears selected Fields, 24, No. 11 overall in the 2021 draft, and he just wrapped up his third season with 2,562 yards passing, 16 touchdowns and nine interceptions in 13 games, along with 657 yards rushing and four rushing TDs.

In 2022, Fields rushed for 1,143 yards and eight touchdowns while throwing for 2,242 yards, 17 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.

The Raiders loom as another potential landing spot for Fields, as they hired Luke Getsy as their offensive coordinator after he held the same position in Chicago the last two seasons.

Trubisky, whom the Bears drafted No. 2 overall in 2017, started two games for the Steelers in 2023 after Pickett, the No. 20 pick in 2022, went down with an ankle injury and threw three interceptions across a pair of losses. He was then benched for Mason Rudolph, who surprisingly led the team to the playoffs.

Pickett, who was kept on the bench for the Steelers’ playoff loss to the Bills despite recovering from his injury, has thrown just 13 touchdowns and 13 interceptions in 25 games (24 starts) over his first two NFL seasons.

Ryan Tannehill is another name linked to the Steelers, as NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport said Sunday that Pittsburgh will “at least explore” reuniting the 35-year-old with new offensive coordinator Arthur Smith, the fired Falcons head coach who was the Titans offensive coordinator in 2019 and 2020.

Tannehill made the Pro Bowl in 2019 as Tennessee reached the AFC Championship game, and he threw a career-high 33 touchdowns in 2020, but he was benched for rookie Will Levis during the 2023 season.

Schefter, during his appearance on McAfee’s show, also threw out Russell Wilson as a possibility for the Steelers as he and the Broncos seem headed toward a breakup after Sean Payton benched him late in the season.
