The Indiana Fever celebrated Caitlin Clark’s college graduation Sunday before the start of a training camp practice as the rookie guard readies to make her highly anticipated WNBA regular-season debut Tuesday.
Clark, who was unable to make her Iowa graduation Saturday, was presented with a “Certificate of Graduation” as her teammates and personnel cheered during the surprise festivities, according to an Instagram video posted on the Fever’s page.
Clark concluded her prolific career at Iowa in April, when she and the Hawkeyes fell to the undefeated South Carolina Gamecocks in the NCAA title game, 87-75.
Later that month, the NCAA’s all-time Division I scoring leader was selected first overall by the Fever in the 2024 WNBA Draft.
Clark got off to an explosive start in the preseason, sinking a deep 3-pointer in her first professional basket during Indiana’s 79-76 loss versus the Dallas Wings on May 3.
She had an impressive showing at home in Indiana days later, scoring 12 points in the Fever’s 83-80 win over the Atlanta Dream.
Clark and the Fever will open the season on the road against Connecticut on Tuesday, with the Sun selling out their first opener in decades with 8,910 tickets sold, ESPN reported Monday.
With her home debut set for Thursday against the New York Liberty, the 22-year-old is eager to get rolling.
“You’ve got to go out and compete every single night and if one night is not good for us, you have an opportunity to come back a couple days later and respond,” Clark said last week. “I think this group will be ready (for the regular season) and everybody’s excited.”
Clark isn’t the only rookie who received a sweet graduation treat from her new WNBA club.
The Seattle Storm honored former UConn guard Nika Mühl with a makeshift ceremony over the weekend.
Mühl was selected in the second round of this year’s WNBA draft by the Storm with the 14th overall pick.
