In 2023, the U.S. organic market (including food and non-food products) totaled $69.7 billion in sales, an increase of 3.4%, as reported by the Organic Trade Association. Organic food sales reached $63.8 billion last year.
For both organic food and non-food products, pricing was the main driver of the boost in dollar sales in 2023. However, the price gap between organic and conventional is narrowing, as many non-organic items experienced steeper price growth than their organic counterparts.
Accounting for 29.4% of organic sales, organic produce continues to lead the market — the category grew by 2.6% in 2023, reaching $20.5 billion and making up more than 15% of total fruit and vegetables sales in the U.S. Avocadoes, berries, apples, carrots, and packaged salads were the top performers in organic produce.
Growth in other categories in 2023 included:
- Sales in the organic grocery category — a new category including breads and grains, condiments, and packaged and prepared foods — accounted for 22.1% of organic sales. The sector grew by 4.1% last year, totaling $15.4 billion.
- Sales of organic beverages increased by 3.9%, reaching $9.4 billion.
- Organic dairy and eggs hit $8.2 billion in total sales, an increase of 5.5%.
“In the face of inflation and considering organic is already seen as a premium category, the current growth shows that consumers continue to choose organic amidst economic challenges and price increases,” said Tom Chapman, co-CEO of the Organic Trade Association.
