For the first time since 2015 and just the second time since 2004, the winner of the French Open won’t be Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal or Roger Federer.
Djokovic, the top seed, withdrew from the men’s singles tournament Tuesday ahead of his quarterfinal matchup against No. 7 seed Casper Rudd, citing a knee injury.
After trailing 2-1 entering the fourth set and escaping with a win Monday, Djokovic hinted that he didn’t know his status for the remainder of the tournament.
“I don’t know what will happen tomorrow — or after tomorrow, if I’ll be able to step out on the court and play,” Djokovic said. “You know, I hope so. Let’s see what happens.”
That also made Jannik Sinner, who won his first Grand Slam at the Australian Open earlier this year, the new No. 1 in the world tennis rankings.
