An Oilers fan’s apparent blunder stole the spotlight Thursday during Edmonton’s Game 3 loss to the Florida Panthers in the Stanley Cup Final.
With a little more than a minute remaining in the first period, cameras caught an Edmonton fan cheering moments after Panthers center Sam Reinhart scored the opening goal at Rodgers Place in Canada to give Florida a 1-0 lead.
The ESPN broadcast of the curious series of events sparked a flurry of responses on social media.
“LMFAO, Oilers fan too far gone to realize she’s cheering for the wrong team.” X user Drew Livingston wrote.
“Why was this Oilers fan celebrating the Florida goal?” The Funhouse account wrote.
Given the Oilers’ 2-0 series deficit entering Thursday’s game, conceding the opening goal would be disheartening for the majority of fans.
The Oilers tied the game shortly into the second period, so perhaps the fan was celebrating prematurely. Or maybe she was just oblivious to the situation and attending the game simply to enjoy herself.
Regrettably for Oilers fans, Florida responded with three more goals to secure a 4-1 lead going into the third period.
The Western Conference champions were able to make a late push with two goals but fell short of tying the game.
Shockingly, the viral fan on Thursday has not been the most talked-about spectator of the playoffs.
One fan, who broke the internet by flashing the crowd during the Oilers’ Game 5 victory in the Western Conference Finals against Dallas, holds the title.
Kate, the fan in question for her raunchy act, was eventually located by Barstool Sports’ “Spittin Chiclets” podcast following the game.
When asked what inspired her to flash the crowd, she replied: “You know, what … I don’t know.”
“The handful of Cheezies that I ate all day and the eight Trulys I drank in the first period was definitely inspiring,” she then added.
Clearly, Edmonton fans get very into it.
After Thursday’s game, the Panthers — this year’s Eastern Conference champions — lead the best-of-seven series, 3-0.
The Panthers could potentially close out the series with a Game 4 win Saturday.
