United States soccer fans want to see a change, and they want it now.
The angry American fans took to social media calling for US men’s national team coach Gregg Berhalter to get fired following their elimination from Copa America with a 1-0 loss to Uruguay at Arrowhead Stadium.
Berhalter had already been on the hot seat heading into the match as the United States hoped to make waves in the tournament with the World Cup set to be hosted on American soil in 2026.
Instead, a disjointed American squad was on their heels most of the night, and Mathias Olivera buried a rebound in the 66th minute to give Uruguay the lone goal of the night.
The lackluster night only increased calls for Berhalter’s firing, which started at the stadium as fans were leaving.
A video posted on X showed fans chanting “fire Gregg” as they made their way out of Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City.
“Genuinely pissed off. Rational minds have been asking for a new coach for years,” one account wrote on X. “The fact that US Soccer rehired Gregg Berhalter is INSANE. It’s ok to be wrong but it’s not ok to STAY wrong. New coach ASAP needed for the USMNT.”
Another video posted to social media by Fox 4 in Kansas City’s Harold Kuntz showed fans booing Berhalter as he went over to thank those in attendance.
Berhalter had been re-hired last summer to mixed reviews from fans and media and his tenure leading the program has not been viewed in the best of light.
When asked if he was the right man to lead the USMNT going into the 2026 World Cup, he simply replied “yes.”
But that won’t be enough to quell the angry fans.
“Believe it or not, the Supreme Court ruled this morning that the President can unilaterally fire Gregg Berhalter and no one can stop him,” one user posted.
“Gregg Berhalter getting fired would bring me more joy than any USMNT win could,” another person wrote.
