Sources say young catching star Francisco Alvarez and the Mets were engaged in long-term extension talks when Alvarez’s agency, Rimas, headed by Bad Bunny, was decertified, halting talks.
The discussions were just getting started so the sides weren’t close to a deal (and with the Mets in the 110 percent tax bracket, extending pre-arb players is tricky). Alvarez declined to discuss but did say Rimas, currently in a court fight with the union over its existence and technically unable to rep players, is still his agency.
Jackie Bradley Jr., who along with ex-Met Alex Ochoa helped turn Juan Soto into a plus outfielder, was a surprise signee for the Mets as he may have unlocked something offensively (1.200 OPS for the Long Island Ducks). This isn’t necessarily any part of the motivation but JBJ is close to Soto.
The Mets’ lineup is deeper than most but they are still considering outfield upgrades. A left-handed hitter is preferred.
Jesse Winker, never been a fan favorite at Citi Field, could fit.
Bullpen remains the Mets’ most pressing need. A lefty feels like a necessity.
