Lionel Messi is Big Apple-bound.
On Saturday, Sept. 21, his Inter Miami CF swoops into The Bronx to take on the New York City FC at their home Yankee Stadium.
Coming into the match, Inter Miami CF leads the MLS’ Eastern Conference with an impressive 19-5-4 record; Alonso Martínez and Santiago Rodríguez’s NYCFC sit at sixth place at 11-7-10.
The Saturday showdown will be Messi’s first in New York. Although his team went toe-to-toe with the New York Red Bulls at Harrison, NJ’s Red Bull Arena in March, he sat that contest out because he was with the Argentinian national team at the time.
Inter Miami CF head coach Gerardo Martino confirmed with reporters that Messi will play this time around.
“His availability comes with a catch,” the New York Post reported. Martino said “the club would be careful not to overexpose Messi on the field and risk any further injury for the star” who just returned to the lineup on Sept. 14 after spraining his ankle in the Copa América final.
If you want to see Messi play — for who knows how long — last-minute tickets are still available for the Saturday match between Inter Miami FC and NYCFC.
