Cooper Rush leaving for Ravens brings major Cowboys QB questions

Dak Prescott is nearly the last quarterback standing in Dallas.

The Baltimore Ravens have secured quarterback Cooper Rush on a two-year contract worth up to $12.2 million, including $4.2 million guaranteed, per multiple reports.

This move positions Rush as the primary backup to Lamar Jackson, enhancing the Ravens’ quarterback depth.

Rush, who entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent in 2017, had been with the Dallas Cowboys for eight seasons prior to leaving for Baltimore.

He gained prominence during the 2022 season, stepping in for an injured Prescott and leading the team to multiple victories.

Rush threw for 1,051 yards, five touchdowns and three interceptions that season.

Prescott signed last season for a new deal that guaranteed him $231 million, though the contract was reworked this offseason to free up $36.6 million in cap space.

The departure of Rush leaves the Cowboys’ quarterback depth chart notably thin, given that Trey Lance is also in free agency.

With Will Grier as the only backup, the Cowboys face a pressing need to bolster their quarterback room following a tumultuous season that saw Prescott’s 2024 end prematurely due to a hamstring injury, though he’s expected to be ready for this coming campaign.

The 2025 NFL Draft presents an opportunity for Dallas to address the quarterback room, and potentially their future at the position even as Prescott, 32 in July, has guaranteed money on his deal that runs through 2028.

The Cowboys have the No. 12, No. 44 and No. 76 picks across the first three rounds and also have seven picks in the last three rounds.
