Smoking is an expensive habit to have, and for golf star Charley Hull it might be an expensive habit to try to break as she’s putting her money where her mouth is and going cold turkey.
Hull posted three videos to her Instagram on Monday. Two of them displayed her stroke on the course, while the final video has made waves as she made her shocking, expensive pledge.
“Today, I’ve made a decision, I’m gonna stop smoking,” Hull said as she handed her pack of cigarettes over to fellow English golfer Ryan Evans. “A £10,000 (≈$13,000) bet, if I pick up a cigarette in the next two months, I’ll give you £10,000 — and I’m shaking on that. Deal?”
Evans and Hull shook hands in agreement and Hull ordered Evans to toss her pack of cigarettes into the trash.
Hull went viral in the past for her on-course smoking habits, with fans raving about it and comparing her to longtime golf star John Daly.
“Charley Hull ripping a heater while [signing] autographs,” an X user wrote in 2024. “Legend.”
Hull was smoking cigarettes while signing autographs during the U.S. Women’s Open last year, where, in addition to the plenty of fans, fellow golfers were even having a laugh and taking photos of Hull’s iconic Daly-esque moment.
But many now hope this is a step in the right direction for Hull’s future.
“Good move!!” an Instagram user commented on Hull’s post. “Not only for [your] health but for the images to give to young fans. You are adored by many.”
Hull, who turns 29 on Thursday, is currently ranked 10th in the world among women’s golfers. She turned professional in 2013 before her 17th birthday and has been on the rise to stardom ever since.
Hull has two LPGA Tour victories and $9.1 million in earnings under her belt since first joining the LPGA Tour in 2015.
Her viral moments smoking during rounds have been a major force in bringing her to her current fame as she has amassed more than 700,000 followers on Instagram.
So far in 2025, she’s made two LPGA appearances and placed top 10 in one of them.
Hull’s next LPGA appearance will come March 27 when the Ford Championship kicks off in Chandler, Ariz.
