LOS ANGELES — Carlos Carrasco is back, if only for a day.
The veteran right-hander rejoined the Yankees on Sunday for their series finale against the Dodgers with the club needing a fresh arm in the wake of an 18-2 loss on Saturday.
To make room on the roster, they optioned Yerry De Los Santos to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
The Yankees were forced to use six of their eight relievers to cover 6 ⅔ innings in the blowout, including Brent Headrick and De Los Santos for the second straight day — meaning they would not be available to pitch on Sunday.
Jonathan Loáisiga and Tim Hill were the only relievers not used on Saturday, with both having pitched Friday night and the Yankees still being careful about Loáisiga’s workload early in his return from the injured list.
Carrasco started the season in the Yankees rotation but pitched to a 5.91 ERA across eight games (six starts) before being designated for assignment on May 6.
He went unclaimed on waivers and accepted an outright assignment to Triple-A, allowing the Yankees to keep him in the organization as depth.
He has not pitched since May 18, making him ready to offer length if the Yankees need it behind Ryan Yarbrough.
The Yankees will have a number of roster moves coming by the time they open a homestand Tuesday, with reliever Fernando Cruz set to be activated off the IL on Tuesday and infielder Jazz Chisholm Jr. likely to join him.
