WNBA stars Satou Sabally, Dijonai Carrington have to be separated

There appears to be no love lost between Satou Sabally and the Dallas Wings.

The Mercury forward and Wings guard Dijonai Carrington had to be separated while exchanging words after Phoenix beat Dallas, 93-80, on Wednesday night.

The contest marked Sabally’s first time playing against the team that drafted her following the Wings trading her to Phoenix in February.

Carrington was also a part of the four-team trade that sent her from Connecticut to Dallas.

After the final buzzer at PHX Arena, Carrington walked toward Sabally, who seemingly waved her off, as seen in a video posted to social media.

Carrington then approached the Mercury players huddled on the court and said something in Sabally’s direction, which led to players from both squads holding them back.

Mercury forward Alyssa Thomas — who was also a part of the trade between Connecticut and Phoenix — played peacemaker, putting her arm around Carrington and escorting her away from the huddle.

Thomas and Carrington became close while teammates for four seasons with the Sun.

Carrington later put her hand up to block one of the cameras that was following the drama on the court.

This game was likely circled on the calendar for both sides, as things were chippy throughout the night.

The Phoenix broadcast team said they were surprised that security didn’t step in earlier to diffuse the situation after the game ended.

“There is some serious drama going on here after this ball game ended,” one broadcaster said.

“I’m surprised security is not out there a little bit more between the players,” another said. “They’re letting them talk. Just walk them off.”

Sabally had 20 points and 10 rebounds to help spoil a 35-point performance by Wings rookie Paige Bueckers — this year’s No. 1 overall pick in the WNBA Draft.

Thomas added 11 points and 10 assists.

The Wings struggled to knock down shots aside from Bueckers, with the rest of the roster shooting a combined for 16-for-48 from the field.

Carrington finished with 11 points and eight rebounds for Dallas.

Before the game, Sabally seemingly took a jab at her former team while sharing her “favorite wing flavor” in a video on the Mercury’s social media page.

“I don’t really eat wings anymore,” said Sabally, who made her eyes big and smirked.

The Mercury (7-4) and the Wings (1-10) meet again July 3.
