Charley Hull exits Evian Championship after collapsing twice

LPGA Tour star Charley Hull was carted off the course Thursday in the opening round of the Evian Championship after collapsing twice, forcing her withdrawal from the major tournament.

The British golfer, playing alongside Ruoning Yin and Haeran Ryu, went down on the fourth tee at the Evian Resort Golf Club in France after “looking unwell” on the previous hole, according to Golfweek.

Hull, 29, received medical attention before hitting her tee shot 15 minutes later. She went down again after the swing and was subsequently carted off, per USA Today.

“Obviously a very unnerving situation for Charley and her playing partners,” said broadcaster Richard Kaufman, who noted it was brought to his attention that Hull had been battling a virus and everything had festered.

Hull received an IV drip at the course, her team relayed to BBC Sport, and she did not need hospital care.

There is a five-way tie for first following Thursday’s first round, with Ireland’s Leona Maguire, Americans Andrea Lee and Jennifer Kupcho, and Australians Gabriela Ruffels and Grace Kim all at 6-under par.

The tournament runs through Sunday.

Ranked No. 19 in the world, Hull was seeking her first major championship win.

The two-time LPGA Tour winner, who became a viral sensation in 2024 after channeling John Daly, finished tied for 12th at the U.S. Women’s Open and the KPGM Women’s PGA Championship earlier this summer.

Hull missed the cut of The Chevron Championship, the first major of the year, back in April.

The final major of the year, the AIG Women’s Open, begins on July 31 at Royal Porthcawl Golf Club in Wales.
