Victor Wembanyama drops casual F-bomb after electric start to Spurs season

It was a well-earned F-bomb for Victor Wembanyama.

The Spurs’ prized big man let the expletive slip out during a postgame interview with ESPN after he dominated the Mavericks in a 125-92 opening-night win on Wednesday.

“This is what we work for, you know,” Wembanyama said. “All of us got our own battles and struggles… God knows, I worked f–ing hard this summer. It’s paying off, you know, all dreams are allowed now. I am just glad to be back because after what I’ve lived, it means something.”

Wembanyama dropped 40 points and 15 rebounds on Dallas after he missed the final three months of last season due to a blood clot in his shoulder.

It was an emphatic statement for the 21-year-old as he enters his third season in the league with the Spurs, having enhanced expectations.

“We needed to make a statement in the locker room. I feel like I needed to make a statement to my teammates,” Wembanyama said, per the AP. “It’s also just the beginning because there’s so much more I want to add to my game. Some things take time and maturity.”

The Spurs have the last two Rookie of the Year winners in Wembanyama and Stephon Castle to go along with a solid group of veterans led by De’Aaron Fox, who is missing the start of the season with a hamstring strain. San Antonio also added Rutgers standout Dylan Harper with the No. 2 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, and he had 15 points in his NBA debut.

“I think we all knew he was going to be assertive,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said. “He’s been out eight months. He’s been waiting for this probably longer and more thorough than anybody else. You saw him take the moment and play spectacular.”

As the Spurs dazzled in Dallas, No. 1 pick Cooper Flagg struggled in his NBA debut for the Mavericks.

Flagg had 10 points and 10 rebounds, with Dallas being outscored by 29 points while he was on the floor.
