Dolphins tried to trade four first-rounders to move up for Joe Burrow before 2020 NFL Draft

As the Dolphins continue to have quarterback struggles, it was revealed that they made a hefty push to land Joe Burrow back before he was drafted.

According to ESPN, Miami offered the Bengals four first-round picks in exchange for the No. 1 draft selection in the 2020 NFL Draft, and, in turn, the ability to draft Burrow.

Miami’s aspirations were quickly put to rest, however, with the Bengals reportedly declining to engage in any discussions — shutting down the offer before it caught any wind, per ESPN.

The Dolphins wound up taking Tua Tagovailoa with the No. 5 selection in that draft, and after nearly six NFL seasons, the team is reportedly ready to move on from him this upcoming offseason.

Tagovailoa is expected to be benched in favor of Miami rookie QB Quinn Ewers for Sunday’s game against Cincinnati along with the remainder of the season.

Though he initially showed high promise for the Dolphins — earning a Pro Bowl spot in 2023 along with leading all quarterbacks in passing yards in that same season — Tagovailoa has struggled this year, throwing a league-high 15 interceptions as Miami is set to miss the playoffs with a 6-8 record.

Getting rid of Tagovailoa in the offseason will not be easy, however, as the Dolphins already owe the 27-year-old $54 million guaranteed in 2026, and they will be on the hook for another $3 million on March 15.

The Dolphins cutting Tagovailoa would result in a $99 million dead money salary cap charge — the largest in NFL history.

Tagovailoa showed disappointment amid losing his starting job, but told reporters that he still wants to help his team in any capacity.

“Naturally, I’d say I’m disappointed. It’s normal,” Tagovailoa said. “Outside of that, I’ve got to do my part.

“My role here right now is to help whoever the quarterback is going to be to lead this team. To help him in whatever way I can and help the team win on Sunday.”
