Maduro’s Arraignment Begins as U.N. and Protesters Speak Out

As Nicolás Maduro, the ousted leader of Venezuela and his wife faced charges in a federal court in Lower Manhattan on Monday, protesters and global leaders responded with mixed thoughts.

“This is just the beginning of a change. Our people can’t even talk. They cannot send messages. So we are here for them. I understand that so many people don’t agree because it looks crazy what happened. But for us that have been suffering for so many years, I just tell you, you never even know what we already live with this situation.” “It is up to the Venezuelan people, not the American government, to decide their path of development, to decide what kind of government they have. And it is not the role of the U.S. government through forever wars to in place a regime, or a neocolonial occupation on Venezuela in order — and Trump has said this himself — in order to steal the resources from the Venezuelan people.” “As Secretary Rubio has said, there is no war against Venezuela or its people. We are not occupying a country. This was a law enforcement operation in furtherance of lawful indictments that have existed for decades.”
