Raiders quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo was evaluated for a concussion following Las Vegas’ 23-18 loss Sunday to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
The Raiders provided that information when explaining why the quarterback wasn’t available for postgame interviews following the loss on “Sunday Night Football.”
Raiders head coach Josh McDaniels did not disclose how or when Garoppolo may have been hurt, but he was never checked for a concussion during the game.
Garoppolo, 31, took a pounding by the Pittsburgh defense.
He was sacked four times and threw three interceptions in the loss, with the final pick coming on the Raiders’ last possession with 12 seconds left in the game.
A sack by Steelers linebacker T.J. Watt late in the first half left Garoppolo wobbly, but the quarterback’s ankle appeared to be the bigger concern since he landed awkwardly.
That sequence and halftime approaching led to the quarterback heading to the locker room to get checked out, according to Pro Football Talk.
Garoppolo returned for the second half and took every snap Sunday under center for the Raiders.
Las Vegas had great expectations for Garoppolo after signing the former San Francisco 49ers quarterback in March to three-year, $72.75 million contract.
But the Raiders have struggled to a 1-2 start this season, with Garoppolo throwing five touchdowns and six interceptions, good for a 52.3 QB rating.
He threw for a season-high 324 yards Sunday — including 172 to star wideout Davante Adams — but could not lead the Raiders to a game-tying touchdown drive in the final minutes.
Garoppolo and the Raiders will look to snap their two-game losing streak Sunday when they visit the Los Angeles Chargers.
