Al Michaels has forgotten more about football than what 99% of fans have ever known.
But that didn’t stop the social media trolls from going after the broadcasting legend during Amazon Prime Video’s exclusive coverage of “Thursday Night Football” between the New York Giants and San Francisco 49ers.
This was the second straight week Michaels got called out for what really should be considered minor mistakes.
In the Philadelphia Eagles’ 34-28 win over the Minnesota Vikings in Week 2, he accidentally referred to Lincoln Financial Field as Veterans Stadium, which was the Birds’ nest until 2003.
On Thursday, Michaels and analyst Kirk Herbstreit were talking about Super Bowl victories for the Giants and 49ers, and mistakenly said both teams had four Lombardi Trophies.
“So you think about the 49ers, this is a franchise that has won four Super Bowls, Bill Walsh won two, George Seifert won two.”
The 49ers actually have five, having won three with Walsh, and Michaels corrected the mistake coming out of the next commercial break.
But by that time, Twitter was buzzing about the 78-year-old Michaels “losing his fastball.”
“FOUR Superbowls? FOUR? Al Michaels needs to retire,” one person tweeted.
Another X user posted, “Al needs to call it a career before it gets too bad.”
“Michaels is warshed. He’s had a great career. It’s over. Time for intermittent feature appearances,” another X user concluded.
However Michaels also had plenty of people rallying to his defense during the 49ers’ 30-12 win over the Giants.
“It’s live TV. He made a mistake and corrected himself,” one X user tweeted.
Another person gave a more passionate defense of Michaels: “He made a mistake….Every person has made a mistake in their lives a time or two so please people ‘LIGHTEN UP.’”
This is Michaels’ second season calling “Thursday Night Football” on Amazon Prime Video.
Before that, he was the voice of “Sunday Night Football” on NBC for 16 years and earlier in his career, he called “Monday Night Football” for 20 years.
The social media police no doubt will be on Michaels patrol next week when the Detroit Lions visit the Green Bay Packers for Week 3 of “Thursday Night Football.”
