Goodbye, “Oakland” A’s.
The A’s are officially dropping Oakland from their name, and the ballclub is making sure everyone knows just what they want to be called.
In a note on Monday, the team made sure to specify just how people should be referring to them, writing, “When referring to the team name, use only ‘Athletics.’ You may use ‘A’s’ on second reference,” The Athletic reported.
The A’s logo will look similar, as they’ll keep the “A’s,” but now it will be green.
Surprisingly, the team will not incorporate California into its new team name after departing the Bay Area after 57 years in Oakland.
The Athletics will move to Sutter Health Park in West Sacramento next season, as they call the Triple-A ballfield their home until their new digs in Las Vegas are ready for the team to move into.
The pilgrimage to Vegas has been a long time in the making for the Athletics and won’t be completed for at least another three years, which forced the team to find a temporary home in California’s capital city.
The Athletics had called Oakland home since 1968 after playing in Philadelphia (1901-54) and Kansas City (1955-67).
The A’s are planning on building a new stadium in Las Vegas on the site of the since-demolished Tropicana casino.
It seems that A’s fans who make the trip to Sacramento next season will have the chance to see one of the team’s lone bright spots still on the roster, outfielder/designated hitter Brent Rooker.
General manager David Forst told The Post’s Jon Heyman that “we’re going to keep [Rooker].”
He hit .293/.365/.562 with 39 home runs to follow up on his All-Star 2023.
