Chaim Bloom has landed his next baseball gig.
The former Red Sox chief baseball officer was hired on Monday as an advisor to Cardinals president of baseball operations John Mozeliak.
Mozeliak had hinted that St. Louis could bring in some outside help for the front office during the winter meetings in November.
“I have known Chaim for a long time and feel that this is a great opportunity for the St. Louis Cardinals,” Mozeliak said in a statement. “It will be good to get an outside perspective of our organization from someone who is as well-respected as Chaim. Having a fresh set of eyes on all aspects of our baseball operations should be helpful.”
Bloom had served as the chief baseball officer in Boston from 2019-23, when he was fired in mid-September after the Red Sox fizzled out of the playoff hunt.
The baseball executive helped construct the 2021 roster that went to the ALCS, but the Red Sox finished in last place in the COVID-shortened 2020 season and again in 2022.
Boston was tied for last in the AL East with the Yankees when they let go of Bloom and eventually finished the season at the bottom of the standings.
During his five-year run with the Red Sox, Bloom’s teams went 351-340.
“I’m excited to join the Cardinals and to be a part of this great organization,” Bloom said in a press release. “Mo and his team have given me such a warm welcome, and I’m eager to build relationships here and to learn, contribute, and help us win.”
The Cardinals are coming off a season in which they fell far from their goals, finishing 79-91.
The Cardinals added starter Sonny Gray this offseason, inking the right-handed pitcher to a three-year, $75 million deal in an otherwise quiet winter.
Both the front office and manager Oliver Marmol remain in place, and St. Louis is looking for help to put itself back in a position like it had been in 2022.
Bloom brings a wealth of experience, not only from his time with the Red Sox but also from 15 years with the Rays, who he’d been with since 2005 when he started as an intern.
