The NFL’s coaching cycle just about demands that some coaches seek their next job before finishing their current one.
Chris Long sees a problem in that.
The former longtime defensive end, who won Super Bowls with the Patriots and Eagles, called out the hiring schedule in which coaches who are still in the playoffs interview with other teams.
NFL.com reported Saturday that ahead of Sunday’s Lions-Bucks divisional round game, Detroit offensive coordinator Ben Johnson would interview for the head-coaching positions with the Falcons, Seahawks and Chargers, and Detroit defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn has head-coaching interviews with the Commanders and Chargers.
Long called out the hypocrisy from coaches who ask their players to remain narrow-minded.
“’Get your bodies right. get your minds right,’” Long posted on X. “’Spend every minute you have this week preparing for this game.’ – coaches”
To this point the interviews have been virtual, so the coaches have remained with their teams — but surely these coordinators have had to study up on the potential jobs they seek.
In-person head coaching interviews with candidates still employed by NFL teams can’t happen until Monday.
As the rules currently stand, a coordinator on a team still in the playoffs would risk not receiving the promotion he seeks if he postpones any interviews until after his team is finished.
By that point, jobs likely would be claimed by others.
“There are certainly complications for changing the rule,” Long, who retired after the 2018 season, said to one X user, “but you have to admit the way it is right now makes coaches into hypocrites.”
