Dan Hurley has no bones about being a bit of a villain.
And it seems the devil on his shoulder got the better of him on Saturday when he just had to poke a bit of fun at two NCAA Final Four coaches who were having heated words with the officials.
Hurley has been criticized for the way he’s acted toward the officials, especially this season, and was captured on a now-viral video after losing to Florida last month in March Madness, going on an expletive-filled rant while walking to the locker room.
College basketball reporter John Fanta reported on the cursing done by Florida head coach Todd Golden and Auburn head coach Bruce Pearl during the Final Four showdown on X, which prompted Hurley to chime in.
“Both coaches have shared a lot of words with the officials in this game that are not safe for television,” Fanta wrote.
“No way…What a disgrace!” Hurley responded.
Hurley was clearly having a little fun with his post on Saturday.
And after the women’s team won the national title, Hurley took to his X account to congratulate the team.
“12 Time National Champions!! Undeniably the Basketball Capital of the World…Storrs, Connecticut,” he wrote.
Hurley had expressed remorse about his comments that were captured on video which he felt took away from the season his players had this year.
“Those are three great officials on that game,” Hurley said, according to the Hartford Courant. “So, although I said something in the heat of the moment, in an area of the arena that in pretty much every game I’ve ever coached in college has been media-free. Past the tunnel, by the locker rooms, in the hallway where the coaches go, that’s for the combatants, that’s for the competitors. That’s not for camera phones. Just relative to that, those were three great refs and Florida earned it.
“If I don’t go off the rails at the end there, after that three-year run ended in excruciating fashion. … If I don’t have that emotional outburst there, probably all people are talking about is the run we’ve had, the amazing players.”
