Defense was an epic mess

Grading the Giants’ 35-14 loss to the Ravens at MetLife Stadium on Sunday:

Offense

It is certainly not getting any better.

Putting up 14 points, 236 total yards and going 2 of 12 on third down is bad stuff.

Seeing a QB sneak by Tommy DeVito stopped for no gain was fitting and ugly at the same time.

DeVito was an ineffective 10-of-13 for 68 yards and two sacks before he was forced out with a concussion.

At least Tim Boyle (12 of 24, 123 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT) put the ball up there.

Malik Nabers (10-82, 1 TD) battled and drew two pass interference penalties on CB Brandon Stephens.

He hauled in a 23-yard touchdown pass from Boyle midway through the fourth quarter.

An illegal shift penalty on Nabers negated his 20-yard reception in the third quarter.

He is a competitor.

No running game (55 rushing game) with Tyrone Tracy (10-31) or Devin Singletary (8-25, 1 TD).

All things considered, the line was not terrible (three sacks allowed).

Average gain of 3.9 yards per play is indicative of the lack of dynamism in the attack.

Grade: F

Defense

Oy vey.

What a disaster.

Ravens amassed 445 yards and went 9 of 11 on third down.

Lamar Jackson (21-of-25, 290 yards) threw five touchdown passes (two to Rashod Bateman) and rarely has had an easier time out there.

He also ran it six times for 65 yards.

CB Adoree’ Jackson forced and recovered a fumble by Jackson on the first series.

LB Micah McFadden showed strong pursuit on a first-down sack, helped by a Brian Burns flush.

Burns then added a sack of his own for a 10-yard loss.

Isaiah Simmons stumbled in coverage, leaving TE Mark Andrews wide open for a 13-yard TD.

Double-move by Bateman completely lost S Jason Pinnock on a 49-yard TD that was painfully wide open.

Bateman later added a 20-yard TD easing past S Dane Belton.

This group was not ravaged by Derrick Henry (14-67) but the young, inexperienced and injury-depleted secondary was amateurish, as far as busted coverages.

Grade: F

Special teams

The very first play was a 59-yard kickoff return allowed to Justice Hill.

Jamie Gillan’s first punt traveled 51 yards, with no return.

His second punt was not as good, a low 37-yarder that Desmond King returned 23 yards.

Holding penalty on Matthew Adams ruined a big kickoff return by Ihmir Smith-Marsette.

Thank you

A kickoff by Graham Gano fell in the landing zone and rolled out of the end zone, forcing the Ravens to start a series on their 20-yard line.

Coaching

Seeing Brian Daboll blow a gasket after the botched quarterback sneak shows how frustrating this all is for the head coach and offensive play-caller.

There are no answers on offense and Daboll has been unable to stop all the losing.

It’s a bad combination.

Shane Bowen’s defense held up in back-to-back weeks against Alvin Kamara and Henry but the back end was exploited time and again, with Jackson picking it apart with ease.
