While sitting in a suite for Lakers vs. Mavericks on Wednesday, NBA Hall of Famer Dirk Nowitzki and Bleacher Report journalist Taylor Rooks were caught poking fun at Grizzlies star Ja Morant.
Morant, who was given a warning and eventually fined for showing off finger-gun celebrations during a string of games over the past week, also recently debuted a new grenade-throw celebration.
As Nowitzki and Rooks sat together, the camera just happened to pan to them at the exact time they were doing their Morant impressions.
Rooks started the jokes by putting up the finger gun first, generating a chuckle from Nowitzki.
As Rooks took her phone out to take a selfie, Nowitzki broke out Morant’s latest celebration gaffe, the hand grenade.
Nowitzki even brought the grenade to his mouth and pulled the pin before posing with the fake grenade while Rooks help up her left hand in the shape of a gun.
Morant has shown off several weapon-related celebrations in his career, getting fined $75,000 at one point but maintaining his defiant attitude by continuing to do them.
He was not punished for his latest grenade-throw celebration but has otherwise had multiple run-ins with the league, including being suspended twice for showing off actual weapons online.
The celebration being caught on camera is a bizarre coincidence as Nowitzki and Rooks were quite literally caught in the act during a game with tons of intrigue featuring the Lakers and returning star Luka Doncic.
The Lakers’ 112-97 win came in front of a packed house, with Mavericks fans cheering for their former superstar guard and Doncic departing to thunderous applause Wednesday night.
Rooks wound up posting a picture of herself and Nowitzki, although not them celebrating Morant-style.
Instead, a more wholesome picture of them sitting in the suite with the captain, “Lakers-Mavs with my new teammate!!! NBA on Prime Video coming at ya October 2025.”
