Dolphins have no plans to add quarterback despite injuries

It’s reportedly status quo at quarterback for the Dolphins as Tua Tagovailoa recovers from his latest concussion.

ESPN reported that the team “doesn’t seem likely at this point” to add another signal-caller, with one source telling him that Miami is not “into it at this time.”

The Dolphins will be without Tagovailoa, who suffered the fourth known concussion of his football career during Week 2, for at least three more weeks, if not longer.

Last week, head coach Mike McDaniel started backup Skylar Thompson during the team’s 24-3 loss to the Seattle Seahawks.

Thompson left the game in the third quarter with a rib injury and is questionable to start this week, leaving questions as to whether he, Tim Boyle or Tyler Huntley will start against the Titans on Monday and beyond.

On Thursday, McDaniel was coy about his team’s Week 4 quarterback situation.

“I’ll let it play out,” McDaniel told reporters. “The quarterbacks who will be participating [in Thursday’s practice] will get action and great opportunity. I get to see guys play within this offense and play with their teammates. As the week progresses, I’ll be sure to shout it from the top of the building.”

The Dolphins are 1-2, losing each of their last two games since a season-opening win over the Jaguars.

Miami has managed just three total points in five-plus quarters since Tagovailoa went down against the Bills on Sept. 12.

There was some speculation that Tagovailoa could retire from the NFL after another scary head injury, although NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported earlier this month that he “has no plans to retire” and is already eyeing a return to the field.

Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel responds to a question during a news conference at the NFL football team’s training facility, Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2024, in Miami Gardens, Fla. AP

Tagovailoa signed a four-year, $212.4 million contract extension with the Dolphins in July after throwing for 4,624 yards and 29 touchdowns while playing in all 17 games last season.
