Just when you think you have the New York Mets figured out, the team finds a way to surprise you.
After a poor first two months, most fans wrote off the 2024 season and speculated new GM David Stearns would sell off star first baseman Pete Alonso at the trade deadline.
Then, on June 12, rotund McDonalds character and Happy Meal regular Grimace threw out the first pitch at a game against the Miami Marlins. Improbably, Carlos Mendoza’s ball club has gone 14-4 since that fateful toss from the fictional purple fella.
To be fair, a lot of the credit should also go to veteran DH J.D. Martinez who has been on an offensive tear during the streak. Noted spark plug and hitmaker Jose Iglesias — who dropped the clubhouse anthem “OMG” — has been on fire too; the 34-year-old second baseman is batting an astonishing .388.
And, given how fun the Mets are, one might think tickets would be incredibly pricey.
Improbably — just like the squad’s winning ways — that simply isn’t the case.
At the time of publication, the New York Post found tickets for home games at Citi Field going for as low as just $5 before fees on Vivid Seats.
That’s cheaper than a dog at the ballpark most nights of the week.
Even better, should you go to a home game on a Tuesday, beers, sodas, water bottles, hot dogs, soft pretzels and popcorn can all be purchased for $5 according to MLB.com.
That’s not to mention all the fun giveaways at Cit Field this year like a Brandon Nimmo bobblehead (July 12), Mike Piazza replica jersey (July 27) or Francisco Lindor bobblehead (July 29) to name just a few.
