MOBILE, Ala. — The most significant vacancy on Brian Daboll’s coaching staff remains defensive coordinator, after the sudden exit by Wink Martindale.
That vacancy should be filled in the coming days.
“Dabes is working through that right now,’’ general manager Joe Schoen said Tuesday morning from the site of the Senior Bowl. “Hopefully by the end of the week we’ll have some resolution at the defensive coordinator position. A lot of good candidates that Dabes interviewed, and we’re excited about some of the finalists.’’
It is believed the Giants have narrowed the search to three candidates from those they have talked with.
Dennard Wilson, the Ravens defensive backs coach, has twice interviewed with Daboll.
Other candidates include Chiefs linebackers coach Brendan Daly, Dolphins linebackers coach Anthony Campanile, and Giants defensive backs coach Jerome Henderson.
Two former NFL defensive coordinators, Shane Bowen (Titans) and Derrick Ansley (Chargers), also met with Daboll.
The Giants had also interviewed Bills LB coach Bobby Babich, but he was promoted to Bills defensive coordinator on Tuesday.
If Ejiro Evero is released from his contract with the Panthers, he could be another option for the Giants to bring in.
The Giants wanted to meet with Evero, but the Panthers blocked what would have been a lateral move.
If Evero becomes available, he will have several suitors.
He also remains in the running for the Seahawks’ head coaching job, having had two interviews with Seattle officials.
Schoen said the players on the roster he assembled were not selected wholly for Martindale’s system and that they could adjust if a new coordinator wants to make significant changes to the defensive front.
“The way we’re built, we can be 4-3 or 3-4,’’ Schoen said. “We drafted that way, where we’re not pigeon-holed into one certain scheme. Where the personnel is on defense right now, whether it’s 4-3 or 3-4, I think we could go out and play.’’
