LAS VEGAS — Instead of filling the most important position on Brian Daboll’s staff, another spot opened up on Monday as tight ends coach Andy Bischoff left the Giants to work for newly hired Jim Harbaugh with the Los Angeles Chargers, The Post confirmed.
Bischoff has never before worked with Harbaugh but he does have extensive experience with Jim’s older brother, John, the head coach of the Ravens.
Bischoff was an assistant in Baltimore for six years with John Harbaugh, who no doubt gave his endorsement to Jim, who is assembling his first Chargers coaching staff.
Bischoff will be the tight ends coach in addition to run game coordinator for the Chargers, so it is a slight promotion for him.
As such, the Giants could have blocked the interview and prevented Bischoff from going to the Chargers but chose not to do so.
Bischoff, 53, had never before worked with Daboll before the pairing in 2022. He was the Texans tight end coach in 2021.
Now Daboll has to find a new tight ends coach to work with Darren Waller — who is expected to return, coming off an injury-filled first season with the Giants — Daniel Bellinger and whoever else is on the roster at the position.
The big fish for Daboll to land is someone to replace Wink Martindale to run the Giants’ defense.
There have been eight known candidates interviewed, the most recent being Daronte Jones, the Vikings defensive backs coach and passing game coordinator, who spoke with Daboll last week at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala.
Dennard Wilson, the Ravens defensive backs coach, interviewed twice by Daboll, was hired by the Titans.
Bobby Babich, the Bills’ linebackers coach, was promoted to defensive coordinator in Buffalo.
Brendan Daly, the Chiefs linebackers coach, is the only known candidate whose team is still playing and he could not be hired until after Super Bowl 2024.
Two former NFL defensive coordinators, Shane Bowen (Titans) and Derrick Ansley (Chargers) also met with Daboll, as did Dolphins linebackers coach Anthony Campanile and Jerome Henderson, the only in-house candidate as the Giants’ defensive backs coach.
