Russell Wilson is the latest to get his hands on one of the most in-demand uniform numbers for the Giants.
Wilson will wear No. 3 — just as he has throughout a 13-year career with the Seahawks, Broncos and Steelers — in his first (and maybe only) season quarterbacking the Giants.
Cornerback Deonte Banks wore No. 3 last year and could slip into a third different number in his three seasons after giving up his jersey to Wilson.
Banks wore No. 25 as a rookie, when No. 3 was occupied by longtime Giant Sterling Shepard, who had switched from No. 87 to No. 3 as soon as the NFL changed the rule to allow receivers into single digits.
“Salute to my guy & young star Tae Banks!” Wilson tweeted, including two folded hands emojis. “Grateful for you letting me wear #3 King! Full of gratitude @Giants”
Banks had a much better season as a rookie in No. 25 than he did in 2024, but No. 25 is occupied by running back Dante Miller, so there might not be any going back.
It is not known what, if anything, Wilson paid Banks for the right to wear the number.
The only single numbers that are not retired by the Giants are No. 2 (available), No. 3 (Wilson), No. 5 (Kayvon Thibodeaux), No. 6 (Jamie Gillan), No. 8 (available) and No. 9 (Graham Gano). No. 1 was unretired last year for rookie Malik Nabers.
Quarterback Shedeur Sanders — a possible pick for the Giants in the first round of the draft — wore No. 2 at Colorado.
