How Rory McIlroy landed a favorable pairing as 2025 US Open tee times revealed

OAKMONT, Pa. — The tee times are out for this week’s 2025 U.S. Open at Oakmont, which begins with the opening round Thursday, and Rory McIlroy got a very favorable pairing.

McIlroy, who’s struggled in his two tournaments since winning the Masters to complete the coveted career Grand Slam in April, will play his first two rounds paired with one of his best pals, fellow Irishman Shane Lowry.

The two, along with 2013 U.S. Open winner Justin Rose, will tee it up on No. 10 at 7:40 a.m. Thursday in the first round and 1:25 p.m. on No. 1 in the second round Friday.

McIlroy and Lowry played the back nine together for a Tuesday morning practice round, teeing off at 6:45 a.m. and finishing at about 9:15.

They’re frequent practice-round partners at tournaments.

Lowry finished runner-up to Dustin Johnson at the 2016 U.S. Open played at Oakmont despite having a four-shot lead in the final round.

McIlroy, who missed the cut in 2016 at Oakmont, won the 2011 U.S. Open at Congressional.

Among the other marquee tee times are world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler grouped with Viktor Hovland and Collin Morikawa at 1:25 p.m. Thursday off No. 1 and 7:40 a.m. Friday off No. 10.

Defending champion Bryson DeChambeau is grouped with Xander Schauffele and Jose Luis Ballester at 7:29 a.m. Thursday off No. 1 and 1:14 p.m. Friday off No. 10.

Brooks Koepka, a two-time U.S. Open winner, is grouped with Min Woo Lee and Justin Thomas Thursday at 1:03 p.m. off No. 1.

Among the local Met Area players, Cameron Young, from Sleepy Hollow Country Club, plays at 1:36 p.m. Thursday off No. 10, Chris Gotterup, from Little Silver, N.J., plays at 8:46 a.m. Thursday off No. 1, Ryan McCormick, from Middletown, N.J., plays at 2:20 p.m. Thursday off of No. 1, James Nicholas, from Scarsdale, N.Y., plays at 2:31 p.m. Thursday off No. 1, and Max Greyserman, from Short Hills, N.J., plays at 12:52 Thursday off No. 10.
