Iowa football is once again in historic territory this weekend.
Less than a month after the Hawkeyes and the Minnesota Golden Gophers set a record for the lowest FBS total since at least 1995, Iowa’s over/under is even lower against Rutgers this week.
The total for Saturday’s Iowa-Rutgers contest is sitting at a consensus of 28 points as of Friday morning, which would be the lowest over/under since at least 1995 and the first total below 30.5 points over that period, according to Action Network.
Iowa and Rutgers both feature struggling offenses and dominant defenses.
The Hawkeyes are scoring just 18.4 points per game, which is the 19th-fewest among 133 FBS teams.
The Scarlet Knights aren’t much better, with just 23.6 points per game heading into Saturday’s game.
Iowa has been among the best in the country at stopping teams from scoring on the other side of the ball, holding their opponents to just 13.7 PPG, the fourth-fewest in the FBS.
Rutgers is also excellent defensively, allowing just 19.8 PPG (tied-23rd-fewest).
Even with historically low totals, the Hawkeyes have consistently been the best college football team for under bettors in recent years.
At 37-19-1, they’re the best team to the under since 2019, according to Evan Abrams of Action Network.
Betting on College Football?
“Iowa is the same every week: not really good offense, really good defense,” Joey Feazel of Caesars Sportsbook told ESPN. “That’s a great calculation for unders.”
During their record-setting contest in Week 8, Iowa and Minnesota combined for just 22 points during the Golden Gophers’ 12-10 win, going well under 30.5 total points.
Last week, when Iowa again had an over/under of 30.5 against Northwestern, the Hawkeyes came out on top 10-7, nearly halving the insanely low total.
