Jaylen Brown has read the comments from angry bettors.
And the Celtics star has a message for any of them who actually want to back up their words.
“If I do happen to scroll, the comments be like, ‘f–k you, n—-r,’ da, da, da, da, da, ‘see, If I see you in the street,’” Brown said on the “Million Dollaz Worth of Game” podcast. “I mean like, for real.
“I’m going to say this to the camera: If one of you parlay motherf–kers runs up on me, I’m going to f–k you up. I’m telling you. Try it if you want to, that’s all I’m going to say.”
Brown’s comments highlight the ugly side of legalized betting in this social media era, where some fans take it way too far to vent their frustrations.
Fans can interact with players like never before and, for some, that means telling their players about bets that did not cash because of said player’s performance.
Suns superstar Kevin Durant got into a back-and-forth exchange on X with an upset fan earlier this year.
Former North Carolina star Armando Bacot noted last year how some fans unleashed on him because he didn’t cash the Over on his rebounds props.
“It’s terrible,” Bacot said last March. “Even at the last game, I guess I didn’t get enough rebounds or something. I thought I played pretty good last game, but I looked at my DMs, and I got, like, over 100 messages from people telling me I sucked and stuff like that because I didn’t get enough rebounds.
“I think it’s definitely a little out of hand. But at the same time too, I get the point of it. Like, if you bet a lot of money on something, and you’re, like, one pick away and somebody messes it up, I understand the part of fans being mad. But it’s annoying, too, at times.”
Brown’s remarks come during a season in which betting has brought bad headlines to the NBA with now ex-player Jontay Porter being banned for life for rigging his player props.
The NBA also investigated Terry Rozier over an illegal betting scheme, but he was not found to have committed any wrongdoing.
Brown and the Celtics have four regular-season games left before they begin their championship defense, likely as the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference.
Boston is a -145 favorite at BetMGM to win the conference and owns the second-best odds (+200) — behind the Thunder (+175) — to repeat as champions.
