Jesse Winker, Willy Adames jaw at each other in intense Mets-Brewers wild-card moment

With the intensity already high for the first game of the postseason, tensions seemed to be at the same level — at least for a moment — between the Mets and Brewers on Tuesday evening.

With the Mets down 2-0 in the top of the second at American Family Field, Jesse Winker ripped a game-tying triple into the right-field corner, but it was what came soon after that turned a few heads.

Winker and Milwaukee shortstop Willy Adames exchanged some words as the Mets designated hitter stood at third base before Starling Marte took his at-bat.

ESPN later showed Winker maybe sharing some thoughts with the infielder as he rounded second base on the triple, but it was unclear if that moment sparked the incident.

Winker spent 61 games in Milwaukee last year and was teammates with Adames.

Tuesday’s fiery interaction comes days after Winker was drilled by Brewers starter Frankie Montas in the teams’ series last weekend, and SNY analyst Ron Darling posited that the hit-by-pitch was “on purpose.”

It’s not clear what would have sparked that incident either or if the pitch was intentional.

Winker was replaced in the top of the fifth by J.D. Martinez, who delivered a two-RBI single to put the Mets up 8-4.
