Jets teasing their potential while still ‘a little bit off’ on offense

The Jets have scored three touchdowns in each of their first two games.

That might not seem like a monumental achievement except when you realize they only did that once all of last season.

This is the first time the Jets have had consecutive games with three touchdowns since 2021.

What makes the accomplishment more impressive is the Jets offense still has issues to fix.

Ask anyone around the Jets and they do not feel their offense is hitting on all cylinders yet.

The Jets feel that once they fix a few things on offense, they can really put up points.

“We flashed [Sunday], but I still feel like we’re just a little bit off,” running back Breece Hall said. “We’re right there. We’re getting close. That’s the most exciting thing. It was a good win [Sunday] and we still feel like we could do better.”

The Jets are 26th in yards per game in the NFL at 265.5 yards per game.

They have had seven three-and-outs out of 19 possessions (not counting end of half kneel-downs) in the first two games and another drive ended on a fumble after one play.

At the moment, it feels like the Jets are showing glimpses of what they are capable of.

The 12-play touchdown drive in San Francisco and the game-winning drive in Tennessee are examples of what the Jets believe their offense can look like consistently as they get more time together.

Aaron Rodgers said the Jets are “early in the process.”

“We haven’t put it together,” Rodgers said. “We have some times in games where we are moving it pretty well. But we just haven’t been consistent enough in the passing game or the run game.”

Rodgers has been inconsistent in his first two games this season.

At times, he has looked skittish and unsure of himself.

At other times, you see how he can carve up a defense and how he can still make throws most other humans can’t.

Rodgers has not cracked 200 yards passing, a modest total for someone as accomplished as he is.

After Sunday’s win over the Titans, Rodgers said he believes the Titans and 49ers defenses are two of the best in the NFL and that has contributed to the Jets’ struggles.

“We’re just kind of … one little thing off,” Rodgers said. “Sometimes it’s a bad throw, sometimes it’s miss a landmark in the run game, sometimes route concepts get screwed up, and we don’t run the right routes, so just the little things. It’s correctable. It is little though. The difference between 315 or 400 yards and whatever we had [265 yards on Sunday] is really minute. We have to figure out how to fill in the gaps there, especially on a short week.”

There are good things the Jets are showing.

The pass protection has been a strength for the team’s rebuilt line.

Rodgers has been under very little pressure through two games.

The Jets also found something in the running game Sunday with rookie Braelon Allen serving as a complement to Hall.

Tight end Tyler Conklin has been nearly invisible in the offense, which is strange considering his role in past seasons and this summer in training camp.

“I think every day we kind of become more and more cohesive,” Conklin said. “I think the run game keeps getting better and better. I think the pass game keeps getting better and better. Obviously, there are some things we have to clean up. One of those things is not starting slow. We’ve had two games where we kind of came out slow with three-and-outs and what not, but I do think we’re trending in the right direction.”

The Jets believe they are only going to improve as the season progresses.

“It’s a funny feeling in the sense that we recognize that we can be better, but we’re still scoring,” Jets coach Robert Saleh said. “It’s back-to-back games with three touchdowns and which hasn’t happened here in a long time. We’re still looking at it like, man, we got so much more in the tank and all that’s going to come. “
