Jorge Soler and the Braves are the target of a lawsuit that alleges the outfielder injured a fan during the 2021 World Series.
Mayra Norris, who is suing the outfielder and team for unspecified damages, alleges that Soler, during Game 3 against the Houston Astros at Truist Park, threw a ball with a “great deal of force and speed” into the right field stands where she was sitting with her husband and her brother-in-law and she was struck in the eye, according to the lawsuit filed in Cobb County Superior Court.
Norris alleges Soler, 31, was in right field in the fifth inning but “not in close proximity at all to the stands” when he turned toward the seats and threw the ball in the direction of Norris, who was in section 109 in the right field corner.
“Defendant Soler did not softly toss the ball into the stands to the crowd,” the lawsuit reads. “He threw the ball overhand, with a great deal of speed and force. Defendant Soler threw the ball with such force and speed that it hit Ms. Norris directly in her right eye causing extensive and excruciating injury to her right eye.”
Norris was then taken to a medical treatment office by security and had photos taken of her injury.
The lawsuit alleges she has suffered extensive eye injuries that include multiple fractures, a right eye edema and infra-orbital abrasion and that she will need “long-term medical care.”
The Braves also failed to “keep the premises in a safe and proper condition and by failing to prevent and by allowing dangerous and reckless conduct by Defendant Braves’ players,” according to the lawsuit.
Norris is looking for damages to cover medical expenses, along with “general and compensatory damages to be determined by a jury at trial.”
Soler, who now plays for the Marlins, was acquired by the Braves before the 2021 trade deadline and led the Braves to their first World Series title in 26 years.
He hit .300 with three home runs and six RBIs en route to winning that year’s World Series MVP.
