Kurt Warner questions Giants leadership after benching Russell Wilson

The Giants’ colossal quarterback shift might not be enough to save the sinking ship, at least in the eyes of one Hall of Fame QB.

The Giants — off to a disheartening 0-3 start — called an audible on Tuesday and benched struggling veteran Russell Wilson in favor of rookie Jaxson Dart ahead of their Week 4 matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday at MetLife Stadium.

Kurt Warner, a Pro Football Hall of Famer and former field general for the Big Blue, responded to the report by drawing concern around the team’s offensive gameplan under head coach Brian Daboll.

Warner conveyed that the reason for the Giants’ woes could extend beyond who’s throwing the passes.

“They obviously need to do something,” he posted to X, “but I wish it started by being more creative on O! I love Coach Daboll & have seen that creativity, but haven’t seen it much in these last 3 weeks & it’s been hard on QB IMO (especially in RZ)! Even game against Dallas was a lot of ‘throw it up’ type plays!

“When you have seen someone do it, it always makes you wonder is it because of what players are able to handle/do or is it the coach? Maybe this move will give us some clarity!”

Despite a 2022 AP Coach of the Year campaign in Daboll’s first year at the helm — when he led the team to a shocking playoff appearance — the team owns a brutal 18-35-1 record through his four seasons in charge.

The Giants went 3-14 last season and are off to another stumbling start in 2025.

Wilson, a 36-year-old former Super Bowl champ with the Seattle Seahawks, joined the Giants on a one-year deal. Wilson was tabbed the starter but the pressure quickly intensified when the Giants selected Dart in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft in April.

The situation is similar to the one Warner had. He joined the Giants in 2004 and was tasked with mentoring rookie QB Eli Manning.

It took all of 10 games before Manning took the reins, kickstarting a two-time Super Bowl winning career, while Warner reignited his career with the Arizona Cardinals.

Though Wilson has shown flashes of his vintage self — throwing for 450 yards and three touchdowns in the Giants’ Week 2 loss to the Dallas Cowboys — Warner called out the team’s over-reliance on the “moon ball” which has yielded the overall deflating results.

Dart, an Ole Miss product and preseason standout, has played just six NFL snaps across short-yardage and red zone situations, having yet to attempt a pass.

How — and if — the Giants’ gameplan will change with Dart in the backfield remains to be seen. Luckily, Warner only has to wait until Sunday afternoon for his questions to be answered.
