The Liberty took on the Canyon of Heroes in October after winning their first franchise title. On Monday, they took on the red carpet.
Reigning WNBA champions Jonquel Jones, Sabrina Ionescu and Breanna Stewart joined Liberty co-owner Clara Wu Tsai at the Met Gala, adding to the spectacle celebrating “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style” on the Upper East Side.
The Liberty party all donned coordinating black-and-white outfits by designer Sergio Hudson and stylist Courtney Mays and prepped for the event at The Surrey hotel.
Jones, Ionescu and Stewart all sported power suits — a signature of Hudson’s design — while Tsai wore a strapless black mermaid crepe gown with her own Liberty-colored jewelry along with a Tyler Ellis clutch and Saint Laurent shoes.
Jones, the reigning Finals MVP, wore a crocodile-print leather jacket with black crepe bootcut trousers. She accessorized with a Hublot watch, Jennifer Behr hair accessories, Magnanni Shoes and Saidian Vintage Jewels.
Ionescu was decked out in a white crop top, long black skirt and a black tailcoat tuxedo jacket lined in white. She also had on Stephen Russell jewels, a Sondra Roberts bag and Jimmy Choo shoes.
Stewart, who added a third WNBA championship to her resume last fall, wore a custom ivory tuxedo paired with an AP watch, Saint Laurent boots, Spinelli Kilcolin earrings and rings, Edward Avedis brooches and a Monrowe hat.
All three still looked like champions as they near the start of their quest to defend their title.
“Basketball taught me how to be comfortable in my skin. Fashion lets me tell that story in a different language — one that speaks to legacy, to detail, to presence,” Stewart said in a statement via the Liberty. “Wearing Sergio Hudson tonight felt like honoring craft and culture at the same time, and recognizing the deeper history this year’s theme invites us to reflect on. And honestly, that’s what we do on the court too. We show up with intention, carry history forward, and make it our own.”
“It’s an honor to represent our team, women’s basketball, and our fans at the Met Gala — in the city where we made history,” Jones added. “This is a powerful moment and I’m so proud to be wearing Sergio Hudson on the carpet — a visionary Black designer and a powerful force in the fashion industry who has created a unique look that represents me and my style. I’ve stepped into so many spaces I never could have even imagined as a kid, and the Met Gala is no exception. I am so fortunate to be living my truth in a design that simultaneously makes me feel confident and creatively pushes boundaries. Tonight I’ll stand alongside my fellow champions — Clara, Stewie, and Sab — and show the world that women athletes both belong in and dominate these cultural spaces.”
Hudson previously dressed Michelle Obama and vice president Kamala Harris for Inauguration Day in 2021.
The Liberty start the festivities again at Barclays Center in their first preseason game on May 9 against the Sun.
The regular season kicks off in less than two weeks on Saturday, May 17 and they will host the Aces, who the Liberty lost to in the 2023 WNBA Finals.
