Maryland co-offensive coordinator Kevin Sumlin was arrested and charged with driving under the influence in Florida over the weekend.
The incident took place early Saturday morning on U.S. Highway 301 in Tampa, Florida, according to Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.
Sumlin was arrested at 12:40 a.m. and booked at 2:11 a.m.
There had been no crash or damage to property in the incident, according to The Diamondback.
Sumlin refused a breathalyzer test, according to the report, which could come with a suspended license.
He pleaded not guilty and waived arraignment.
The Maryland football staffer was released on a $500 cash bond later Saturday morning, his record showed.
The incident occurred while Maryland was on a bye week, and the school is monitoring the situation.
“Maryland Athletics is aware of the incident this past weekend involving football coach Kevin Sumlin. As this is an ongoing investigation, we will have no further comment,” a spokesperson told The Diamondback.
Sumlin joined Maryland’s staff in February after head coaching stints at Arizona from 2018-20 and prior to that Texas A&M from 2012-17.
He was the Aggies’ head coach when Johnny Manziel played for the university.
Manziel won the Heisman Trophy during Sumlin’s first season at the helm of the program, going 11-2 while winning the Cotton Bowl.
Sumlin also spent a brief stint as the head coach and general manager of the USFL’s Houston Gamblers in 2022.
He has helped to make an impact on the Maryland offense this season, as the Terrapins are among the top four teams in scoring in the Big Ten, averaging 33.4 points per game.
Maryland (5-2, 2-2 Big Ten) will visit Northwestern (3-4, 1-3) on Saturday, knowing that a win will make the school bowl-eligible.
