PORT ST. LUCIE — The ever-optimistic Brandon Nimmo is hopeful he’ll be ready for Opening Day on March 27 in Houston, though he acknowledged his aching right knee still has to improve for him to get there.
Nimmo took some steps forward Wednesday, running the bases, hitting on the field and taking at-bats in a minor league game for the first time since receiving a gel injection in the knee that’s allowed him to play just one Grapefruit League game this spring.
“I definitely think I’ll be good for Opening Day,’’ Nimmo told The Post after finishing his at-bats versus Astros minor leaguers on a back field near Clover Park. “But we’ll see. I don’t know the future. If we go backwards, it can go in another direction, but I do feel good for Opening Day right now. If things progress, I should be good to go.”
Prior to the at-bats, Nimmo went through a workout at Clover Park, running the bases at about 85 percent and adding other stressors to the bothersome knee that has shown no structural damage.
