Younghoe Koo likely to take over Giants kicking duties

CHICAGO — The Mets are considering a power arm for this weekend to potentially bolster the bullpen.

Dylan Ross, who most recently dominated for Triple-A Syracuse, is a possibility to join the Mets as soon as Saturday in Miami, according to industry sources.

Ross has been working out in Florida since the conclusion of Syracuse’s season this week.

Ross, 25, pitched at three levels for the Mets this season and posted a 2.17 ERA over 49 appearances.

In his 28 appearances for Syracuse, he owned a 1.69 ERA with 39 strikeouts in 32 innings.

Team officials view Ross as a potentially better version of Ryne Stanek.

If Ross is called up, it’s likely he would be considered for mid-leverage situations, with seventh-inning duty as a possibility.

Ross also could be in play for the NL wild-card roster if the Mets clinch a spot.

The Mets selected Ross in the 13th round of the 2022 from the University of Georgia.

Reed Garrett’s shutdown because of elbow inflammation that may precipitate Tommy John surgery has left an opening in the back end of the Mets’ bullpen, which also has been weakened by Ryan Helsley’s disappointing work since his arrival at the trade deadline.

Francisco Alvarez, who homered in the previous two games, was on the bench for Thursday’s 8-5 victory over the Cubs as manager Carlos Mendoza took a cautious approach with the catcher.

Mendoza indicated he had planned to give Alvarez a night off this week and decided on Thursday after Alvarez began cramping up behind the plate a night earlier.

“The past couple of days, some long games behind the plate, and then toward the end, he began cramping up [in his legs],” Mendoza said.

Alvarez, who is playing with a ligament sprain in his right thumb that will need surgery after the season — he also broke his left pinkie during a minor league rehab assignment this month — began the day with an .861 OPS in September, including four homers.

Luis Torrens started at catcher, with Alvarez available off the bench.

Kodai Senga threw a bullpen session in Port St. Lucie two days after a “just OK” live batting practice session.

The Mets will see what develops over the weekend, according to Mendoza, before deciding on Senga’s next step.

The struggling right-hander started twice for Triple-A Syracuse after agreeing to a minor league assignment Sept. 5 to work on his mechanics.
