The Mets have to reach the playoffs first, and that is certainly not a given, even considering the team’s inspired play over the past two months.
But something to ponder following the sensible but hardly splashy moves orchestrated by president of baseball operations David Stearns and his staff ahead of Tuesday’s trade deadline: Who would you want the Mets sending to the mound as starters for a postseason series?
Luis Severino, Jose Quintana and Sean Manaea, as it stands now, would be your three in a wild-card series. That’s good, but not great. If the Mets were to advance beyond that and reach the NLDS, a fourth starter likely would be needed.
And there is where it gets dicey.
