Arguably, the craziest bet of the year hit Tuesday night.
One bettor at DraftKings won nearly $1 million by nailing a 19-leg same-game parlay, with most legs being unders, on the Lakers vs. Jazz game in Los Angeles.
The odds came in at 6000/1 (0.02 percent implied), and the $166 bet turned in $996,000 for the bettor.
For a relatively small $166 wager, this is the dream: Life-changing money — nearly $1 million in winnings — that can result in a new car and maybe even a new house.
Diving into the actual bet, it’s hard enough pin-pointing so many unders for players but it’s even more challenging to see those unders also result in a blowout win.
But that’s what happened Tuesday as the Lakers mashed the Jazz from the opening tip in their 131-99 win.
The bet was almost for naught, as the very first leg, Anthony Davis under 26.5 points, barely cleared as Davis scored exactly 26 points.
Davis scored his 26th point with five minutes left in the third quarter but was pulled for Jaxson Hayes not long after and didn’t play in the fourth quarter.
That’s about as lucky as it gets but wait, there’s more.
Jazz forward Lauri Markkanen grabbed his eighth rebound early in the third quarter with 9:55 remaining.
The game was such a blowout that he was pulled with 6:44 left in the third and never returned in the fourth quarter.
The leg in question, Markkanen, under 8.5 rebounds, somehow ended up being a winner.
Betting on the NBA?
This bet is not the rule — it is an extreme exception.
Sportsbooks generally make their money on parlays.
But every now and then, the players do win.
And this is one of the most unlikely wins we’ve seen all year.
