The acrimony between Deion Sanders and Jay Norvell extended even further than previously realized.
In September, before Sanders’ Colorado team played against its in-state rivals Colorado State, Norvell took a dig at Sanders on his weekly radio show.
“I sat down with ESPN (this week), and I don’t care if they hear it in Boulder. I told them, ‘I took my hat off and I took my glasses off,’” Norvell said. “And I said, ‘When I talk to grown-ups, I take my hat and my glasses off.’ That’s what my mother taught me.”
Amazon’s “Coach Prime” documentary, which followed the Colorado season, unearthed audio of the postgame exchange between Sanders and Norvell.
“Congratulations … and I was never talking about your family … ” Norvell told Sanders.
Sanders cut him off and said: “Oh, you was talking about my momma.”
“No, I was not,” Norvell protested.
Sanders was undeterred, telling him: “Yes you were, yes you were.”
The two then parted ways.
Colorado erased a 20-point deficit in the fourth quarter to win the game 43-35 in double overtime, but suffered the big blow of losing star two-way player Travis Hunter for multiple weeks after he took a late hit from Colorado State defensive back Henry Blackburn.
Norvell was asked after the game about the comments he’d made about Sanders.
“This rivalry has been going on way longer and before I got here,” said Norvell, who has now completed his second season at Colorado State. “It’s going to be going on way after I leave.”
“I wish the best for (Sanders).”
Colorado drew a lot of buzz with early-season victories against TCU and Colorado State, but ultimately faltered late in the season, dropping their final six games to finish last place in the Pac-12.
