The Mets had already knocked in a run in the first inning on Wednesday night against the Brewers and were primed for more.
But Pete Alonso killed a rally with a bizarre double play where he barely got halfway down the first-base line because of his own bat in Game 2 of the NL Wild Card Series at American Family Field.
With runners on the corners and one out, Alonso, the Mets All-Star, hit a 110.1 mph ground ball to Brewers shortstop Willy Adames, who helped turn into a routine double play with Alonso barely getting down the line.
The reason why?
Alonso, after putting his bat down, tripped over it with his right foot an fell down head-first into the dirt.
It was a bizarre end to the inning, one in which the Brewers answered right back with a Jackson Chourio leadoff homer in the bottom half.
The Mets, though, scored two in the second to move up 3-1.
