The 17-year-old Pennsylvania high school football player who suffered a “significant brain bleed” and collapsed lung during a game on Sept. 1 has taken a “positive step,” according to his family.
Mason Martin, a Karns City High School (Pa.) quarterback, was taken to the hospital after collapsing during the third quarter of their game against Redbank Valley High School.
His mother, Stacy King Martin, provided the positive update on Facebook, and the Karns City football Twitter account shared the update on X.
“Within the last 24 hours, Mason has demonstrated some purposeful movement in his arms. His eyes have slightly reacted to light. He is also retracting his legs when his toes are pinched. His lung has completely recovered, and his chest tube has been removed,” Stacy wrote.
“We were waiting to give a social media update at the end of the week, knowing he will have more test and changes throughout the week, but we wanted to clear up any rumors now. This is the first positive step in an extremely long journey. The prayer vigils held at the hospital and at Karns City have overwhelmed us with joy and motivation.
“We ask for your continued prayers and support. Thanks again.”
Martin staggered during the third quarter of last Friday’s game and collapsed on the field before being taken by helicopter to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh, per the Butler Eagle.
His family told KDKA-TV that the quarterback suffered a significant brain bleed and a collapsed lung.
The family then posted on Facebook via Stacy’s account that “the truth is we need a miracle” and asked for prayers and strength.
Mason has since shown improvement.
“There wasn’t much hope,” Denny Martin, Mason’s father, told WTAE-TV. “I put out in a Facebook post that we need a miracle. We needed one and people went to work. And within the last 24 hours, he showed improvement that he hasn’t shown before any of these vigils took place.”
Vigils were held on Saturday and Sunday, according to the Daily Mail. A GoFundMe has been set up for Martin and has already raised more than $41,500 as of Wednesday morning.
